Getting Started in Underwater Photography!

Hello! Chances are if you’ve come across this blog - you have an interest in taking your camera out in the water….  and I’m here to assist you in that process in anyway I can!

I have wonderful memories, growing up by the ocean, in a seaside town called Bournemouth in the UK. I would jump the waves with my mum and my gran and we’d be out there no matter the weather. This had such a profound effect on me and shaped my life and whats important to me now!

I’ve always had a love for photography, playing with a small film camera at a very young age, then in my adult life I took it seriously and discovered the magic of shooting sunrise. Once I’d seen an incredible sky explode, there was no going back - I was hooked!

Fast forward to 2020, when the 2 worlds collided! I began swimming in the ocean every day and at first I’d shoot sunrise, then swim, or vice versa - then one day the thought dawned on me, that I needed to shoot sunrise out in the water!

From then on I’ve been obsessed, photographing sunrise, swimmers, surfers, underwater life and seeing this from a more abstract direction - Once you take your camera out into the water it can blow your mind at what you can capture and the different perspectives you can see through your lens!

So heading out in the water with your camera is very different from shooting on land, theres alot more to think about!

From the kit that you use, and how to protect it, to how you approach your subject, best settings to you and how to use the ocean to unleash your creativity!

I love sharing my passion with people and over the last few years have found myself more and more involved with photography education from workshops to talks and I love the community that brings!

So teaming up with the Fuji Academy, we’ve created a FREE webinar AND an online underwater photography workshop where I cover pretty much everything I’ve learned in the last few years of photography out in the water. The beauty of the photography world is that you never stop learning! I am always pushing my photography boundaries and that’s what keeps it exciting, so looking forward to sharing this with everyone on the course!
